What automated scans can and can't find

In Deque's 2021 study of over 2,000 first-time audits, its automated tests found about 57% of accessibility issues by volume. Automated checks are good at catching things like missing image descriptions, low-contrast text and unlabeled form fields.

It can't judge whether alt text is actually helpful, whether a keyboard user can finish checkout, or whether captions are accurate. That's why every report ends with a short list of things a person should review.

Built on open standards

  • Checks powered by axe-core, the open-source accessibility testing engine
  • Rules mapped to WCAG 2.2 levels A and AA
  • No overlay script — fixes go into the site itself
  • Each issue links to the element and the rule behind it

Questions

Is this checker free?

Yes. You can scan up to 10 pages of a site three times a day without signing up. The full PDF report only asks for your email.

Does a clean scan mean my site is ADA compliant?

No. No automated tool can determine ADA compliance. In a 2021 Deque study of its own audit data, automated tests found about 57% of issues by volume; keyboard use, screen reader experience and whether content makes sense still need a person to review.

Which WCAG version do you check against?

The scanner runs axe-core rules tagged for WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at levels A and AA, plus a set of best-practice rules.

Do you store my site data?

We store the address you scanned and the results so we can show your results page and report. We don't log in to your site or collect personal data from it. See our privacy policy for details.

How is this different from an accessibility overlay?

Overlays add a script to your site that tries to patch issues in the browser. We don't add anything to your site: we find issues and tell you how to fix them in the site itself.
